Beyonce’s MUA, Sir John Launches ‘The Lion King’ Make-Up Collection Ahead Of Movie

As we all wait on baited breath for the big screen debut of Disney’s live action, The Lion King, starring Beyoncé, her famed makeup artist is cooking up a premiere of his own. World-renowned make-up artist Sir John teamed up with Luminess Cosmetics to create a limited-edition capsule collection inspired by the movie and it almost goes without saying that it’s wonderful.

The famed MUA has been in the beauty industry for over a decade and along with being Beyoncé’s coveted makeup artist and dear friend for over five years, he’s also made a name for himself in product development. Sir is behind some of Bey’s most iconic looks, like her famous Vogue magazine cover, her minimal, no make-up make-up looks, and her most iconic red carpet appearances, including her latest at the Wearable Gala where she channeled “The Lion King’s” Nala. Not to mention, he shares the same name as her 1-year-old son, Sir.

Sir John is a global makeup and color artist who reveals his clients’ natural beauty. His appreciation for cosmetics helps capture the essence of women in their truest form.

This is a collaboration that we couldn’t wait to talk about. With Queen Bey playing the voice of Nala in Disney’s remake of The Lion King, it’s only right that her MUA wants to help us achieve our inner feline fierceness on our faces. We had the chance to sit down with Sir John to get all of the details surrounding his 8-piece Lion King x Luminess make-up collection.

Disney’s The Lion King made it’s debut 25 years ago as the first Disney film to celebrate the continent of Africa and it’s culture. So, when Sir John was tapped to create the collection, he went back to where it all started: Africa. Sir traveled to Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa spending time on a safari to pull inspiration for the rich palettes. For the six-shade “Kingdom” sculpting palette ($42), Sir John said, “Johannesburg is the most treelined city in the world and has the most vegetation. Going on a safari, you just see so much life. There’s nowhere else you really need to pull inspiration from for a palette like this.”

Sir John took out his phone to share the stunning images of the Safari and said, “Take a look at the color of the dirt. It’s so red. It’s so, so rich. This is everywhere. It’s like the color of a brick. Seeing stuff like this kind of really gets you in the mind of like ‘Okay, this is where we want to take it. This is where we want to go.”

The “Romantic Atmosphere” matte red liquid lipstick ($24) was inspired by the rich dirt that Sir described.

Sir John looked at the characters in the most unexpected ways when creating his make-up collection for a Disney movie that doesn’t have a typical princess. From Nala’s teal blue eyes to natural colors in a lion’s mane, Sir’s vibrant collection is a culmination of different hue’s inspired by the intriguing nature of the wildlife characters and landscape of African royalty.

This collection shows the power, strength, and culture that The Lion King truly means to us. A story of a young, lion prince living in the flourishing African Pride Lands and his journey through adult-hood has left an everlasting impact on us. The movie has had an undoubted influence on our culture, so when we asked Sir John why this collection was so important to him, he said:

“It’s special to me because, although it’s not the first time my name is on a product, this is the first time that I’ve ever released anything in the US, period. And working with a company where I care about the people. I love working with Luminess and I’ve been rocking with Disney since I was a kid. I remember going to see Lion King when I was 8 years old and now we’re all grown-ups. This is a love letter to those girls who are bringing their kids for the first time.”

His appreciation for African pride and royalty made it easy for him to come up with this brilliant capsule collection. And if you’re wondering whether Beyoncé and the rest of Sir john’s celebrity clients will be wearing the collection, he made it very clear that they will.

“I think [Beyoncé] or any one of my girls will be wearing this for a very long time. I’m going to be shoving this down everyone’s throats for a while. Trust me. ‘Do you want to wear something else? Nope, nothing else is available. All I brought is this. I brought ten palettes of this to do your makeup.’”

The 12-color “Can’t-Wait To Be Queen” eyeshadow palette ($42) includes a range of nudes, golden browns, and blues with names of iconic characters such as Mufasa, Simba, Nala, and Zazu for each shade.

The packaging also includes etched images of Simba’s mesmerizing eyes. Sir was estatic about the one-of-a-kind packaging saying, “This is the first time that packaging has been on the market. The packaging technique itself is called etched enamel. It’s all laser-etched out. It’s all hand-drawn, too. If you look at this palette, this is thousands of little dots that are all hand-drawn.”

The collection is buildable and is also cross-functional. The “Circle Of Life” highlighter ($40) can also be used an eyeshadow and some of the brown shadows can be used to sculpt.

With the summer coming, we asked Sir John how to achieve the perfect summer glow. He gave a quick tutorial saying, “Sculpting is like the 2.0 evolution of contouring. Sometimes, contouring can be a bit intimidating to a consumer. But we all know how to slightly start to shade or sculpt but we don’t want to see DCL [or] digital contouring lines. I think that the sculpting palette is going to be essential to illuminate. It’s going to snatch you a bit in terms of sculpting [the face]. The sculpting palette is going to be ideal as well as the highlighter and the eyeshadows. This looks like summer nights to me.”

The limited edition capsule collection will be available at luminesscosmetics.com/disney on June 15th and  ULTA.com on June 16th. The Lion King will hit theaters on July 19th.

Starrr transformed into one fabulous animal-print-wearing queen nusing the entire Luminess Collection!

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for The Lion King makeup collection by Luminess Cosmetics and Beyoncé’s makeup artist, Sir John, to finally be available for sale — then Hakuna Matata, babes. There are literally no worries because the collection is now up on the Luminess Cosmetics website, and the swatches are out and about!

Sir John and Luminess Cosmetics didn’t come to play in the wild — they came to slay. Per the swatches and the makeup looks that we’re seeing, this collection is as dope as the cast of the new live-action film! Ahead, you’ll find every single swatch from The Lion King makeup collection, plus a gorgeous LEWK from makeup extraordinaire, Patrick Starrr!

Can’t Wait To Be Queen ($42, Luminess Cosmetics)

The Lion King eye shadow palette is certainly the star of the collection and for good reason, as it captures the overall essence of the film! The palette has all of the neutrals that represent the lands shown in The Lion King. Still, it takes note of the gorgeous animals and jungles shown in the film with its jewel tones. The palette features 12 high-pigment eye shadows in a mix of satin, matte, and shimmer finishes.

Circle Of Life Highlighter ($40, Luminess Cosmetics)

This highlighter was inspired by the iconic sunset of the Lion King film, and it totally nails the feel, as it is an accurate depiction of the sunny, glowy look of the overall movie! “It’s the circle of life and it moves us all,” the brand quoted the film on Instagram. “Our Circle of Life Highlighter enhances and brightens on every skin tone.” This highlighter can be used on the face and body!

Legacy Tinted Lip Balm ($24, Luminess Cosmetics)

This lip balm is meant to be a “universally flattering nude sheer color,” and the brand boasts that it’s expertly selected by Sir John himself. Still, it would be in error to not note that it’s a little light to be a true nude for anyone with a dark skin tone. Luckily, it’s a lip balm, so it’s still safe to wear underneath your true nude lipstick or gloss. This nude shade is adorably called Hakuna Matata.

Kingdom Sculpting Palette ($42, Luminess Cosmetics)

This sculpting palette features six cool tones inspired by the scenes of the African Sahara in the animated film. They have a matte finish, are buildable, and meant to be easy to blend. These shades can be used to define and sculpt facial features. As you may know, these aren’t the best for bronzing due to their cool tones.

Be Prepared Liquid Lipstick ($24, Luminess Cosmetics)

Luminess and Sir John have a liquid lipstick that’s meant to actually feel comfortable and be long-wearing. The lipstick has a matte finish, is created to be weightless, and is meant for all-day wear. There are two shades available: Trouble (rich warm brown) and Romantic Atmosphere (a true red). These lip colors are great for everyday wear, which means you get to take your love for The Lion King with you anywhere you go.

Be Brave Matte Lipstick ($24, Luminess Cosmetics)

The matte lovers are getting all the love with this collection! These lipsticks have a matte, velvety finish. The lipstick is smudge-proof and meant to be long-wearing. Once again, these are everyday colors you can wear anytime you want. The shades are Pounce (cool-toned pinky nude) and Lion’s Mane (a red-orange).

Starrr transformed into one fabulous animal-print-wearing queen using the entire Luminess Collection! He obsessed over not only the pigments of the eye shadow palette but also how lightweight it is and how FABULOUS the mirror is. He ultimately went with a neutral eye (using smokey browns topped with champagne and gold shimmers) and gave it an extra dose of glam with glitter-topped eyeliner. The end result was absolutely gorgeous.

Check out Patrick Starrr’s complete tutorial ahead.

Will you be scooping up the Lion King makeup collection from Luminess Cosmetics?! It’s available right now, but as you know, there’s a catch. This collection is limited edition, so you’ve got a limited amount of time to scoop it up and try it out. Grab your must-haves while you still can.

Sir John Is Dropping A ‘Lion King’ Makeup Collection To Help Your Channel Your Inner Fierce Lioness

You guys, all these Disney live-action remakes have me rethinking my career choices. Maybe I should ditch being a beauty writer and try my hand at acting so I can achieve full Disney princess status in one of the films? I likely won’t be cast in anything soon, though, so to hold me over, I’ve found something to fulfill my Disney cravings: Sir John is dropping a Lion King makeup collection, and oh my gosh, it’s so exciting. Don’t you think? It’s a collab I honestly never saw coming, but given that Sir John glams Beyoncé, who has a starring role in the film, it makes sense that he’d want to get involved. Anything this man touches turns instantly more beautiful, so you bet your bottom dollar I’ll be buying the entire capsule collection.

“It’s been a labor of love and I’m so happy that it’s out and we can talk about it, and I don’t have to keep secrets,” Sir John told Entertainment Tonight in an exclusive interview about the collection, and his excitement was palpable. I’m equally thrilled! Sir John is king of fierce beauty, and what’s more fierce than a lion-themed line? While sometimes, collections based on popular films can lean on the cheesier side, this 8-piece drop couldn’t be more chic. Would you expect anything less from the makeup master himself?

BEHOLD: THE SIR JOHN X LUMINESS LION KING COLLECTION:

“I have to make sure that, whatever I do, it has to address the concerns of all women, you know, from Harlem to Hong Kong,” Sir John shared with Entertainment Tonight, adding passionately, “A lipstick can change the world.” It’s safe to say he nailed his mission of a collection for all, as a quick glance at some of the promo images shows that these products really do suit any and every skin tone.

YES, LADIES, KEEP SERVING THAT FIERCE LIONESS REALNESS!

AND THAT THING HE SAID ABOUT LIPSTICK? THE DROP HAS QUITE A FEW, SO GET EXCITED:

First up is the Legacy Tinted Lip Balm, which comes in a convenient chubby stick and will retail for $24, as will all the lip products. Next, there are two shades of Be Prepared Liquid Lipstick, in shades “Romantic Atmosphere,” pictured above, and “Trouble,” a more orangey nude Last but not least, there are two shades of Be Brave Matte Lipstick, including “Pounce,” pictured above, and “Mane,” a bold red. I love the gold and black lion featured on all the packaging — the nod to the movie is apparent, but it still feels luxe and sophisticated, not kiddish or gimmicky.

PLUS, THE PAYOFF IS STRAIGHT FIRE. NUDE OR BOLD, THIS LINE HAS YOU COVERED:

OF COURSE, THERE ARE SOME POWDER PRODUCTS TO LOVE, TOO:

The Can’t Wait To Be Queen Eyeshadow Palette will retail for $42, and if you guessed that the name is a cheeky play on the film’s song, “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” then congrats, you nailed it. There’s also the Circle of Life Highlighter, which will deliver a warm, bronzy glow for $40, and the Kingdom Sculpting Palette, which offers six contour shades for $42.

BOLD EYES AND A SCULPTED FACE? THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR A READY-TO-RULE LEWK:

SIR JOHN SHARED THIS CLOSE-UP OF THE EYESHADOW PALETTE ON INSTAGRAM, AND I HONESTLY CAN’T STOP WATCHING IT. CHECK OUT THAT SHIMMER!

Of course, the famous MUA took to social media to announce his big news. “Guys! @luminesscosmetics and I are so proud and excited to present the Disney Lion King Cosmetic Collection. It’s 8 limited-edition cosmetic pieces inspired by the African Landscape & characters from Disney’s The Lion King,” he captioned next to a video. Within minutes, fans lost it as they hit the comment section with joyous replies sharing their excitement.

If you didn’t know the makeup genius is behind some of our favorite Latina’s beauty looks such as Joan Smalls, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Adriana Lima. The full product line includes lipsticks, a highlighter, two palettes for contouring and highlighting, a makeup palette showcasing an array of peach and brown shades, along with a deep emerald, a shimmering violet and more dreamy hues. There is a Be Brave Lipstick in Pounce or Lion Mane, marked at $24 and the Circle of Life highlighter priced at $40. From the cat-eyed looks in the campaign to the eyeshadow palette’s…the spirit of the movie permeates the collection

You may be new to the beauty brand Luminess, but its upcoming makeup collection is about to dominate your Instagram feed. (That is, if you haven’t yet scrolled by teasers for it). Although it’s not yet available, there are three things the internet’s already obsessed with when it comes to the limited-edition collection by Sir John x Luminess: Disney’s The Lion King, gorgeous makeup, and the queen herself — Beyoncé.

But it may be dropping even sooner than you realize. The Lion King Collection by Sir John x Luminess will arrive on the brand’s website June 15, followed by a release on Ulta’s website and at ShopDisney.com on June 16. Those looking to swatch the brilliant shades should keep an eye on their local Ulta stores, too — select locations will also begin carrying the collection on July 1.

Can’t wait for the release date to get here? You can preview The Lion King Collection by Sir John x Luminess online just by visiting the brand’s site. There, you’ll see just how extensive this collection is — there is a sculpting palette, an eyeshadow palette, a highlighter, and multiple styles of lip colors. The packaging for the collection is noteworthy, too: Iconic elements from The Lion King, like scenes and characters’ faces, decorate the cosmetics. Prices start at $24 — for the bullet lipsticks, liquid lip colors, and the lip balm — and go up to $42 (the price of both sculpting and eyeshadow palettes).

The collection’s Disney inspiration goes beyond just the title, as well. From the cat-eyed looks in the campaign to the eyeshadow palette’s African landscape-inspired shades, the spirit of the movie permeates the collection. However, so does the talent of Beyoncé’s makeup artist, Sir John, who helped to create the new pieces. (Side note: Queen B is the voice of Nala in the upcoming live-action remake, naturally.) Luminess’ website explains that the original Lion King movie had been a favorite of Sir John’s growing up, and that he’d felt that connection grow as he worked throughout Africa.

Make sure you visit Luminess’ site June 15 to grab the collection, though — because with the upcoming movie coming out (and Beyoncé’s fans waiting) this one will definitely sell out. Ahead, a preview of the Sir John x Luminess collection.

Disney’s classic film was reborn in makeup form

Calling all The Lion King lovers who happen to be makeup enthusiasts: Disney’s classic film was reborn in makeup form.World-renowned makeup artist Sir John worked with Luminess Cosmetics to create a limited edition 8-piece capsule collection, and it’s essentially what my makeup dreams are made of. The collaboration makes a lot of sense: Beyoncé is the voice of Nala in the forthcoming remake (in theaters July 17), and Sir John has been the mastermind behind her makeup for years.

From the packaging’s intricate illustrations to the intentional shade ranges, each product pays homage to Africa. “There are no humans in the Lion King movie, so I was inspired by the landscape of Africa,” Sir John told me in an interview. “In Johannesburg, I went on safaris and got to see what real soil looks like. And it doesn’t look brown, it’s so rich and red, which created these color stories in each of the products.” From daytime neutrals to dense jewel tones, the tones span the spectrum and work for all women.

The man himself stopped by the Marie Claire offices and showcased what a full face of his collection looks like on me. Keep scrolling for a 10-minute makeup tutorial for women who consider time a luxury (*raises hand*).

Step 1: Sculpt Your Skin to Define and Accentuate Your Face

Sir John began by sculpting my forehead, cheekbones, and jawline with a fluffy brush using his Sculpting Palette ($42). The powder-based palette comes with six cool-toned shades inspired by the Sahara. I’m obsessed with how this palette accentuated my features, and made my entire face look three-dimensionally snatched.

“Sculpting is different from contouring,” Sir John explained. “All of these colors have a cooler undertone, which gives your skin that depth of feel and allows your cheekbones and eye sockets to receive it. These shades are all super super-matte, void of any shimmer, so they really do sculpt. Using a brush when your skin is slightly wet from foundation is the best way to apply this.”

Step 2: Highlight for a Lit-From-Within Glow

A smooth, finely-milled highlighter ($40) wins me over every time. This velvety formula is buildable, with a golden finish inspired by that unforgettable sunset scene in The Lion King. “I wanted to be sure the highlighter translated well on all skin tones,” Sir John told me. “It doesn’t matter how fair or deep you are in complexion, there’s a spot on your cheekbones that this will work for. It’s so finely-milled, so there aren’t any large particles that will create that chunky highlighter look, which is never the goal.”

Step 3: Apply the Most Perfect Nude Lipstick

The perfect nude for deep skin tones does exist—you’re looking at it right now. Many women of color share the same struggle when it comes to finding neutrals to complement deep complexions. This liquid lipstick “Trouble” ($24) paints my lips in a gorgeous wash of neutral, and dries down in seconds without sucking the life out of my lips. It’s my match-made-in-heaven and has already traveled the world with me. “This is a ‘90s matte brown,” Sir John described. “It’s the perfect nude and looks so different on everyone. There’s lots of vitamin E and humectants in the formula so it’s hydrating.”

Step 4: Apply the Same Lipstick On Your Cheeks and Eyes for a Monochromatic Moment

I’m never not in the back of an Uber doing my makeup. And when there’s two minutes left until I reach my destination the last thing I want to do is search for blush and eyeshadow. Life hack: Use this lipstick as blush and eyeshadow. It creates uniformity and only requires your fingers—a win-win. Sir John applied this lipstick on my cheeks in tapping motions and swiped it onto my lids in literally one minute. The shades instantly enriched my skin with a warm glow. “These are all convertible colors,” he explained. ” You can also use the highlighters as eyeshadows, the sculpting palette as a daytime eyeshadow, and of course this lipstick as cream blush.” This is what I call magic, baby.

To complete the collection Sir John created a blue-based red lipstick “Romantic Atmosphere” ($24) that’ll make your pearly whites pop, an orange-based red lipstick “Lion’s Mane” ($24) that’ll make your skin look super-healthy, a creamy matte nude lipstick “Pounce” ($24) that works on all skin tones, a tinted balm “Hakuna Matata” ($24) to enhance your natural lip color, and a do-it-all eyeshadow palette “Can’t Wait to Be Queen” ($42).

The Finished Look:

Touched by an angel.

From Baby Phat and Giambattista Valli to Stranger Things and The Lion King, brand collabs are killin’ it this year. See what other collections have making a splash this summer—and snag some goodies for yourself!

Beyonce’s Makeup Artist Just Came Up With the Perfect Summer Beauty Look

Disney’s The Lion King was one of the first movies I ever saw in a theater, so I’ve been counting down the days until the live-action remake hits theaters next month. But, while I just can’t wait to revisit some of my favorite childhood characters, when Beyoncé’s makeup artist Sir John announced that he teamed up with Luminess Cosmetics to create a limited-edition collection inspired by the film, I immediately was more excited about all of my potential summer makeup looks. (Side note: In case you somehow missed the casting announcement, Bey is voice of Nayla in the remake.)

The products in the collection include a sculpting palette, an eyeshadow palette, a highlighter, liquid lipsticks, traditional lipstick bullets, and a lip balm. Prices range from $24 for the lip products to $42 for the eyeshadow and sculpting palette. The complete collection can be purchased in a vault for $250.

What immediately stands out about the collection is that if you were to look at the all of the shimmery and matte shades without seeing the packaging, they still capture essence of the film and its African setting. So, I reached out to Sir John on the phone to find out what went into creating the collection.

“I spent a lot of time South Africa, and I’ve been there five times this year,” Sir John tells me. “I went on a safari and got so inspired seeing the colors of the clay and the soil because it’s so red, rich, and warm there. I took tons of pictures and videos of what I saw on my phone and brought it back home. Then, I made a mood board of the photos and started swatching colors.”

Sir John didn’t just travel far to create the collection, he also says that he and Luminess has a tight timeline, doing a years-worth of work in approximately six months. “When I got the phone call from Disney, it didn’t hit me that it was really happening,” he says. “The next thing I had to do was figure out who I was going to partner with to manufacture the collection to make sure it had the right pigment, color payoff, and packaging. Luminess is a company I met and worked with around Coachella time, and I was looking for an opportunity to work with them again.”

Now that the collection is out in the wild, Sir John has been teaming up with everyone’s favorite beauty bloggers to put the collection in action, including Shayla. He filmed this killer emerald smoky eye look using one of the collection’s few vibrant shades.

You can check it out below:

In the video, Sir John gives a ton of application tips, talks about how he got his start as a makeup artist, and what it’s like working with Bey.

Since it’s officially summer, the unofficial season of glowy skin, and the Lion King collection includes The Circle of Life Highlighter, a universally flattering shade for a lit-from-within glow, I got him to spill his secret for keeping your highlighter from melting off during the summer.

He tells me to use two highlighters, using a liquid one as a base… and then going over it with the powder formula. “It’s still luminous and gives you that glowing complexion, but it won’t melt off — it will stay there,” he says. “Even if it does melt off because we are going into summer, you’ll still traces of a beautiful, gleaming complexion.”

Considering one of his clients performs in stadiums, dancing for the majority of her show, I’m going to take Sir John’s advice and start layering my highlighter this summer.
